Despite what you may have heard about Patti LuPone, the Broadway star won’t be playing a witch on American Horror Story: Coven, which premieres Oct. 9 on FX. “Patti will be playing someone who will go up against [Jessica Lange’s supreme witch] Fiona and her daughter Cordelia [Sarah Paulson],” says executive producer Tim Minear. LuPone’s Joan Ramsey becomes a thorn in the women’s sides when she and her sexy son move next door to Fiona’s boarding school for young witches. “Patti’s character is a bit of a holy roller who has recently lost her husband under suspicious circumstances,” Minear says.

Lange has known LuPone for years and is excited to go head-to-head with a fellow larger-than-life diva. “I love her dearly,” Lange says. “We almost share a date of birth.” (Lange was born April 20, 1949, and LuPone the day after.) But which woman should we put our money on when the spells start getting cast? “Oooh,” Lange says. “I’m in awe of Patti, but that’s tough to call.”

After playing a nun in the second installment of “American Horror Story”, Jessica Lange’s character in the upcoming chapter of the thriller series isn’t committing a celibacy. In fact, the show has found a love interest for Lange’s Fiona.

Landing the role of Fiona’s boyfriend, who according to series creator Ryan Murphy is “sexy” and “dangerous,” is Danny Huston. The writer shared the news via his Twitter page as tweeting, “Jessica Lange’s got a sexy (and dangerous) BF this year: welcome to Coven Mr. Danny Huston!”

Award-winning actor/writer/director Huston has appeared in Martin Scorsese’s “The Aviator”, Sofia Coppola’s “Marie Antoinette” and Ridley Scott’s “Robin Hood” among others. His latest film “The Congress” was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16 and he is currently filming Tim Burton-directed “Big Eyes”, which also features Christoph Waltz, Amy Adams, Krysten Ritter and Jason Schwartzman.

“American Horror Story: Coven”, set to premiere October 9 on FX, centers on Lange’s witch character Fiona, who is determined to protect the Coven when mysterious attacks have been escalating against her kind. Sarah Paulson plays her daughter.

Kathy Bates plays Marie Delphine LaLaurie, or Madame LaLaurie, loosely based on the real-life Louisiana-born socialite infamous for killing and torturing black slaves in the 1830s. She was initially a best friend to Fiona but later turns into her worst enemy.

Angela Bassett is cast as Marie Laveau, a real-life Louisiana Creole woman “in the 1800s who was very influential in the city.” She was known as a Voodoo priestess. Taissa Farmiga, who starred in the inaugural season, returns to play a new arrival in New Orleans who is harboring a terrifying secret of her own.

American Horror Story: Coven, the newest miniseries in the American Horror Story franchise, will debut on Wednesday, October 9 at 10:00 PM ET/PT on FX. Currently in production in New Orleans, the 13-part miniseries will air Wednesdays at 10:00 PM ET/PT though January of 2014.

American Horror Story: Coven tells the secret history of witches and witchcraft in America. Over 300 years have passed since the turbulent days of the Salem witch trials and those who managed to escape are now facing extinction. Mysterious attacks have been escalating against their kind and young girls are being sent away to a special school in New Orleans to learn how to protect themselves. Wrapped up in the turmoil is new arrival, Zoe (Taissa Farmiga), who is harboring a terrifying secret of her own. Alarmed by the recent aggression, Fiona (Jessica Lange), the long-absent Supreme, sweeps back into town, determined to protect the Coven and hell-bent on decimating anyone who gets in her way.

Coven features an extraordinary cast including Oscar®, Emmy® and Golden Globe® award winners Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates; Golden Globe Award winner and Academy Award® nominated Angela Bassett; Emmy Award nominated Sarah Paulson; Golden Globe Award winner and Emmy nominated Frances Conroy; Oscar and Golden Globe award nominated Gabourey Sidibe; Emmy Award nominated Denis O’Hare; Emmy Award nominated Patti LuPone; Evan Peters; Taissa Farmiga; Lily Rabe; and Emma Roberts. Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Dante Di Loreto, Tim Minear, James Wong, and Jennifer Salt are Executive Producers of American Horror Story: Coven. It is produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television. The first two AHS miniseries, American Horror Story and American Horror Story: Asylum, combined for a total of 34 Emmy Award nominations.

American Horror Story scored 17 Emmy nominations, which tied for the highest total of any program in 2012, and Jessica Lange won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie. Asylum earned 17 nominations in 2013, which was the most of any program this year.

Straight from the star herself, Oscar and Emmy winner Jessica Lange has dropped the news that she’ll be returning to the stage in a new Broadway mounting of Eugene O’Neill’s masterpiece Long Day’s Journey Into Night.

“Yes, absolutely,” responded Lange when asked about a Broadway return in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. “About 12 years ago now, I did a production of what is probably my favorite play ever of all time, Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night, and I am planning on doing that sometime within the next year and a half back on Broadway.”

Lange starred alongside British actor Charles Dance in a West End production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Long Day’s Journey in November 2000. She earned an Olivier Award nomination for her performance as Mary Tyrone, a drug-addled mother struggling with a morphine addiction. She last tread the Broadway boards as Amanda Wingfield in the 2005 revival of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, and she made her Broadway debut in 1992 as Blanche DuBois in another Williams classic, A Streetcar Named Desire.

“Blanche DuBois and Mary Tyrone probably are my favorite characters that I ever, ever, ever played,” continued Lange. “It’s wonderful when you are able to create this character and then revisit it years later. So that’s what I’m really looking forward to.”

The actress was nominated for six Academy Awards (winning two for Tootsie and Blue Sky), five Emmys (winning two for Grey Gardens and American Horror Story) and 13 Golden Globes (winning five). She’s currently wowing audiences in Ryan Murphy’s acclaimed FX series American Horror Story, which premieres its third season in October 2013.
